In 1935, the people of Manistee County built this monument, and others on this road, to honor Dr. William Edward Coates, a medical doctor and advocate of health and safety. Dr. Coates practiced medicine from 1903 until his death in 1928 and promoted tuberculosis education, highway improvement, and public sanitation.
