The Diamond is the sheer east face of Longs Peak in Colorado, a more than 900-foot wall set entirely above 13,000 feet in an unusually exposed alpine setting. Named for its distinctive shape, it became one of North America’s classic big-wall alpine climbs. After the National Park Service rejected an initial climbing proposal in 1954 and kept the face closed until 1960, Dave Rearick and Bob Kamps made the first ascent on August 1–3, 1960, on the route later called D1. The wall’s reputation grew further when that climb was recognized in Fifty Classic Climbs of North America, and the Casual Route, first climbed in 1977, became its most popular line.
