The Battle of the Crooked Billet was fought around this spot on May 1, 1778, when General John Lacey's command of 400 officers and men stationed at the Crooked Billet, now Hatboro, was attacked by a detachment of 800 British cavalry and infantry under Lieutenant Colonel Abercrombe and Major Simcoe's Rangers. About 15 American soldiers were killed near this spot, fifteen were wounded, and a number were taken prisoner. Six or seven of the patriotic soldiers were buried in the Noble family graveyard, and an equal number were buried in another nearby location. Among the known dead buried there were Captain John Downey, Captain Walter Denny, Quartermaster Albert Adams, Sergeant John Neill, Private Jonathan Ross, and Private John Poorman.
