Military
At Crooked Billet, American patriots under Gen. John Lacey were engaged in the conflict for Independence. Col. William Dean and Capt. Isaac Longstreth are also named there. The site also honors Patriotic Capt. John Downey and others who were cruelly slain on that ground in the struggle for American liberty. A grateful tribute was chartered and erected A.D. 1861 by the Hatbobough Monument Association. The text links the patriots of 1776, who achieved independence, with their successors in 1812, who established it, and declares in 1861 that the nation was struggling for its perpetuation and that the Union must and shall be preserved.
