South Shore State Park in Clinton County, Illinois, occupies 26,000 acres along Carlyle Lake, the state’s largest manmade reservoir, and is closely tied to one of southern Illinois’s main recreation areas through its lakeshore. In October 2016, part of the park closed after the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which owned the underlying land, said the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had not provided sufficient maintenance on the leased property. The Corps considered that area unusable, sought federal help for emergency repairs, and planned to add the affected parcel and shoreline to the adjoining Dam East Recreation Area while the park’s broader future remained uncertain.
