The Lacona Depot was the hub of village activity for more than a century. The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Rail Line was completed through East Sandy Creek, later called Lacona, in the spring of 1851, and the depot opened in November 1872. In 1891, the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad purchased the line and replaced the original depot. The rail line's entrance into Lacona Village materially contributed to the town's prosperity by improving transportation, encouraging new enterprises, and introducing industries. Blount Lumber Company and Corse Press, the area's two largest industries, used the train station to ship their products, and so did local farmers and both post offices.
