Chippokes Plantation, established in 1619, is one of the oldest working farms in the United States. It has been worked by slaves, share croppers, tenant farmers, and is currently leased to local farmers. Most of its barns date to the 1920s, when the Stewarts owned the property, and although they are now used for storage and closed to the public, the Dairy Barn remains open. Built from the remnants of an older barn, parts of the Apple Barn may be the oldest structure on the plantation, with hewn saw-pit timbers, wrought iron nails, and tall down braces suggesting a late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century date. Its original use is unknown, but by 1910 it housed a mill for crushing apples and other fruit, and in 1918 Victor Stewart adapted it for curing and packing tobacco grown on the property. The Dairy Barn supported the Stewarts' dairy operation and now houses a tractor collection. The Horse Barn sheltered the Stewarts' draft and riding horses, while carriages and equestrian tack are displayed in the Carriage House on the Jones-Stewart Mansion grounds. The Corn Crib was built for storing harvested corn, then in the 1970s was covered in weatherboard and converted into an agricultural museum, whose displays were later moved to the current Farm and Forestry Museum. Though the Stewarts were not farmers by trade, these buildings reflect their commitment to continuing Chippokes' long farming legacy.
