Hispanic, American, and Chinese communities all played vital roles in this development, and these achievements survive in local institutions, laws, culture, and historic building. It also confronts tragedies, including the elimination of the Napa tribe of Wintum Indians by smallpox and harassment, the burning of Napa's Chinatown by actions of some residents, and support for Klu Klux Klan measures directed against Chinese, Catholic, Jewish, and African Americans. Related mosaic scenes portray the flora and fauna of the Napa River and its riparian habitat, including fish and fowl living among sunken boats, wagon wheels, and other remains of land-based civilization along the downtown reach of the river.
