In 1888, Thomas Cree set the first tree on the Texas High Plains in front of his dugout home. The bois d'arc tree became a good luck symbol for settlers through drought, blizzard, and heat. Cree's tree died in the 1970s, and in 1990 county residents planted a new tree here as a memorial to the area's early pioneers.
