The Texas Air & Space Museum in Amarillo preserves the city’s aviation heritage through civilian and military aircraft, space artifacts, and exhibits on regional flying history. Founded in 1989 at Tradewind Airport, it later moved into historic former airport terminal buildings before closing in 2007 when upkeep became too costly. Renamed in 2010, it reopened at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport in 2011 with aircraft displays that linked Amarillo’s early airfield era to spaceflight. Its strongest local connection is NASA Shuttle Training Aircraft 946, flown 49 times by Amarillo-born astronaut Rick Husband, extending the museum’s story from pioneering airports to the Space Shuttle age.
