The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was built from 1858 to 1886, linking East to West. Its western abutment stood at this site, and a replica of a pier from the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River stands near the original site. The first railroad engine crossed the span on April 21, 1856, and the property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
