Citizens of Scott County erected The Soldier's Monument in memory of fellow citizens who died in defense of the Union from 1861 to 1865, honoring them as the bravest of the brave, a credit to their friends at home, their state, and their country, and a terror to their foes, and affirming that they died so that government of the people, by the people, and for the people might not perish from the earth.
