On February 16, 1851, Jonathan and Frances Drake took part here in the rescue of the fugitive slave Shadrach Minkins. The case drew national attention and brought a rebuke from President Millard Fillmore. Undeterred, abolitionists such as the Drakes continued their efforts to end the immoral practice of slavery.
