Bright Angel Trail is the Grand Canyon’s best-known South Rim route to the Colorado River, descending from Grand Canyon Village and, with the River Trail, providing the most common path to Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground. Its upper section followed an older Havasupai path to water at present-day Havasupai Gardens, where the tribe once lived seasonally before being removed in the early twentieth century. Ralph H. Cameron later extended and controlled the trail, charging tolls until it passed to National Park Service control in 1928. The trail also helped launch the Kolb Studio photography business and remains a heavily used but demanding inner-canyon route.
