Van Saun County Park in Paramus and River Edge, New Jersey, grew from the former Van Saun family farm into one of Bergen County’s best-known family destinations. Local tradition connects the site to George Washington during the Continental Army’s 1780 occupation, when he is said to have watered his horse at a spring on the property. Bergen County acquired the farm in 1957, and the Bergen County Zoological Park opened three years later, shaping the park’s identity along with attractions such as a miniature railroad, a carousel, pony rides, playgrounds, picnic areas, sports facilities, and seasonal events. By 2016, plans called for a major zoo and park expansion.
