Harbor Beach Hospital
History
4
Beginning in 1920, the Huron Milling Company of Harbor Beach acquired property at the corner of Broad and First Streets, where a hospital was established to serve company employees and the wider community. A new brick-faced, fireproof building provided four private rooms, three three-bed wards, a laboratory, sterilizing room, and operating room, while the frame building housed the nursery, reception room, and nurses' living quarters, at an original cost of $40,000. Improvements followed in later years. In December 1956, the Hercules Powder Company purchased the Huron Milling Company and acquired the hospital, then donated the property to the community in 1957, when it became Harbor Beach Community Hospital under a non-profit corporation formed and governed by local citizens. As the community's needs outgrew the existing facilities, plans were made on June 8, 1961, for a fundraising campaign with a minimum goal of $150,000, and by July 10 a community effort involving 325 people had reported $226,680.47 in gifts and pledges, with total pledges reaching $262,000 by the campaign's conclusion. The hospital timeline records later growth through laboratory services in 1958; expansion planning in 1961 for dietary, laboratory, X-ray, obstetric, and other needs; additions in 1970 of a surgical suite, sterilizing area, patient area, and maternity unit; the opening in May 1975 of a Long Term Care Unit with 40 licensed beds; a new Acute Care unit in 1976; Ultra-Sound technology services in October 1992; the donation in July 1994 of a physician's office on Sand Beach Road, now the Harbor Beach Medical Clinic; the first patient use of CT Scan in January 1995 and the first Laproscopic surgical procedure in June; the purchase of property in Port Hope and the July 27 grand opening of the Port Hope Medical Clinic in 2005; and the October 24, 2008 purchase of the First Baptist Church at First and Broad Street for what became the Conference Center and Administration Building.
