The land that became Breiter-Palm Park may once have been prairie, wetland, or oak savanna before Herman Breiter and Willard Palm, who were brothers, owned and operated the Greenhouse on Church there in 1936. The fresh-cut flowers business and property passed to Breiter's son, Jim, who expanded it into a larger greenhouse operation, and the Greenhouse on Church became an area icon because of its service and products. When Jim Breiter considered retirement, he chose to sell the property and worked with the Bensenville Park District so the land would remain open space and a place of beauty. The Bensenville Park District bought the four-acre site for $642,000 in summer 2003 and received a 50 percent matching land grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Program to help ease the tax burden for local residents. Breiter-Palm Park opened April 22, 2007. Native plants bloom through almost every season, and the park supports a variety of plant and animal species. For years, its setting has given people a place to commune with nature and enjoy the surroundings. In 2021-22, the park was modernized with a new fully accessible playground for all, added fitness equipment along the perimeter trail, and relocation of a peace pole originally installed by Joey Keehn in 2007. Today, it is among the most popular parks in the district and hosts art, fitness, and community programming for all ages.
