Pickwick Landing Dam was completed in 1938. The dam is 34 meters (113 feet) high and 2,352 meters (7,715 feet) long, and its reservoir extends 85 kilometers (53 miles). It provides flood storage of 516 million cu. m. (675 million cu. yd.). Integrated, TVA is the nation's largest public power producer and steward of the Tennessee River, managing navigation, flood control, power supply, land use, water quality, and recreation as a single system to optimize the river's potential for citizens and the environment. Its balanced approach supports shoreline protection and development, power generation and fisheries conservation, and shared use of channels and locks by barges and boats. Its efficient system design uses the river's water for navigation, fish habitat, cooling power plants, spinning turbines, irrigating crops, and drinking.
