Wentworth was situated in the 1880's at the water well of A. J. Winkler, who platted the townsite, gave the title bond, and named the place for Fort Terrett area rancher P. H. Wentworth. Its residents lived in tents and picket homes. The principal building was a two-story school, church, and hall of Dee Ora Lodge No. 715, A.F. & A.M. The town had a post office from Aug. 1890 to Aug. 1891, with Thomas Stevenson, uncle of a future Texas governor, as postmaster. After losing the 1891 county seat election to Sonora, Wentworth's citizens moved away. The lodge hall was relocated to Sonora in late 1891 and served there as a school and community building until 1938.
