Built in 1855 by German settler John Kush, this small adobe-brick house became part of O. Henry’s early career when William Sydney Porter lived here from 1883 to 1885 during his years in San Antonio. Renting the modest two-room home for $6 a month, he founded the humorous magazine Rolling Stone and wrote several San Antonio stories here. The building is significant both as a rare surviving mid-19th-century adobe dwelling and as a literary site linked to Porter’s development as a writer. Rescued from demolition in 1959 and relocated twice before reopening in 1999, it has been preserved with period furnishings and exhibits on his life and work.
