Fought at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar from February 23 to March 6, 1836, this battle became a defining event of the Texas Revolution. Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna besieged and retook the former mission after Texian defenders, joined by volunteers including David Crockett and some Tejano dissidents, held out for 13 days despite weak fortifications, limited supplies, and divided command. Nearly all Texian combatants were killed in the final assault. Although it ended in a Mexican victory, the battle galvanized support for the Texian cause, contributed to the Runaway Scrape, and helped set the stage for victory at San Jacinto.
