John Montgomery Ward, a baseball pioneer born in Bellefonte, grew up here. He played for Providence, the N.Y. Giants, and Brooklyn from 1878 to 1894. In 1880, he pitched professional baseball's second perfect game. He formed the first players' union in 1885 and the Players' League in 1890. He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
