On November 9, 1862, Colonel John Imboden’s 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers captured the town of St. George, where, with a larger Confederate force, he compelled Union Captain William Hall of the 6th West Virginia to surrender his command with relative ease. Although the action was a minor victory for Imboden, it cut short his ultimate goal of destroying the railroad at Rowlesburg by removing the element of surprise. In November 1862, Imboden led his men on a second expedition through Randolph and Tucker counties for that purpose, but he abandoned the mission when news of his presence spread after the capture of St. George. During the brief raid, Federal troops also raided his own camp on the South Fork.
