Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area spans one hundred seventy-one thousand two hundred eighty acres in western Kentucky and northwestern Tennessee between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Once known as Between the Rivers, it was transformed by mid-twentieth-century Tennessee Valley Authority and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam and canal projects that created one of the nation’s largest inland peninsulas. Designated in 1963 and later developed for both conservation and recreation, it came at the cost of displaced families and abandoned or flooded communities. Today it is a major outdoor destination with trails, restored prairie, living history, and surviving traces of earlier communities.
