Built in 1947 with the intention of all out speed, Salem Speedway is a 0.555 mile oval whose daunting high-banked turns have produced dramatic, legendary, and thrilling racing for decades. This demanding track has challenged some of the nation’s best drivers in sprint cars, midgets, and stock cars, and it has served as a training ground for Indianapolis 500 winners and Daytona 500 champions. Indianapolis icons such as Troy Ruttman, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Bobby Unser have raced there, as have NASCAR stars including Darrell Waltrip, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart. Long a mainstay of AAA and USAC open-wheel competition, ARCA stock cars have also played a major role in Salem’s success, while the speedway’s management works to extend its legacy far into the future.
