Medora Covered Bridge spans the East Fork of the White River in southern Indiana and is the longest historic covered bridge in the United States, with the nation’s longest historic covered bridge roof and floor-level siding as well. Built in 1875 by J. J. Daniels after a ferry crossing had served the site, it carried regular highway traffic for many years and even U.S. Route 50 until 1935. Threatened with demolition in 1968, it was saved by Governor Whitcomb in 1971 after plans for a modern replacement. Closed to vehicles after a parallel bridge opened in 1973, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and rehabilitated in 2011.
