In 1852 Isaac Behunin and family came to Pine Creek. By 1854 seventy-seven families had arrived. A branch of the L.D.S. Church was organized, with Rueben W. Allred as presiding elder, and Reddick N. Allred as captain of militia. Ft. Ephraim was incorporated as a city in 1868, with George Taylor Sr. as mayor. Agnes Armstrong was a schoolteacher, and pupils used soft yellow rock for pencils. After Indian raids ended, each man was allotted 20 acres of land outside the fort. A home built near this spot had the engraved rock above the door.
