The Portland to Mokane segment of Katy Trail State Park is 9.1 miles long and features an impressive railroad bridge, close-up views of the Missouri River, and the geologic oddity of Standing Rock. For the first mile and a half, the trail is isolated from Highway 94 and offers a more wilderness-like experience. Trail users have excellent river views from Portland until the highway crossing at milepost 117.3, and the trail then passes through Reform Conservation Area beginning at milepost 118.9, where four fishing lakes provide additional recreation. At milepost 120.4, Standing Rock, an uneroded plug of sandstone, marks flood levels from as long as a century ago. Steedman, at milepost 121.4, developed with the railroad around 1893 and, like many towns along this section of the Katy Trail, was named after one of the railroad's St. Louis investors. The 280-foot-long bridge over Auxvasse Creek at milepost 122.2 probably was built in the 1920s, and its two piers are formed from large blocks of cut limestone. From Auxvasse Creek, the Katy Trail parallels Highway 94 until shortly before the Mokane trailhead.
