Storm Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Sargent County, North Dakota, is a limited-interest refuge managed under Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge. Rather than consisting of federally owned land, it is a federal easement on private property, allowing wildlife habitat to be managed while the land remains privately owned. This type of refuge emerged in the 1930s and 1940s as waterfowl numbers declined and Depression-era programs aimed to provide work. At Storm Lake, as at similar sites, landowners sold easements giving the federal government authority to regulate water levels and restrict hunting. The property is not open to the public, though wildlife may be viewed from nearby public roads.
