Wawayanda State Park is a 34,350-acre protected landscape in northern New Jersey spanning Sussex and Passaic counties around Vernon Township and West Milford. Known for its mountain ridges, wetlands, forests, and lakes, it includes about 60 miles of hiking trails, among them a 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Its notable natural areas include Wawayanda Mountain, the glacial and spring-fed Wawayanda Lake, Bearfort Mountain Natural Area, Wawayanda Swamp Natural Area, and Wawayanda Hemlock Ravine Natural Area. Part of the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion, it supports wildlife including red-shouldered hawks, barred owls, and great blue herons while serving both recreation and conservation.
