Bearfort Mountain, historically known as Bear Ford Mountain, is a ridge in West Milford, New Jersey, extending north from Wawayanda State Park through Abram S. Hewitt State Forest and continuing the line of Bellvale Mountain in New York. The Appalachian Trail follows the ridge across the state line. Rising to 1,331 feet, it features a 68-foot fire lookout tower built by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The mountain is also notable for visible puddingstone exposures from the Skunnemunk Conglomerate and for its place in American art history through Jasper Francis Cropsey’s 1850 painting, reflecting both its scenic character and practical role in forest fire observation.
