On Nov. 25th, 1863, Grose's Brigade of Cruft's Division in Granger's Corps, commanded by Col. William Grose and including the 59th Illinois under Maj. Clayton Hale, 75th Illinois under Col. John E. Bennett, 84th Illinois under Col. Louis H. Waters, 9th Indiana under Col. Isaac C. B. Suman, 36th Indiana under Maj. Gilbert Trusler, and 24th Ohio under Capt. George M. Bacon, crossed Lookout Creek near the railroad bridge. Four regiments, the 59th Illinois, 9th and 36th Indiana, and 24th Ohio, then moved up the creek a half mile, crossed on a bridge of poles built by Woods' Brigade of Osterhaus' Division, and advanced on the left of Geary's Division as it moved toward the northern slope of the mountain. They reached the Cravens House and went beyond it. After crossing the creek, the 75th and 84th Illinois advanced on the river road to a position covering the mouth of Chattanooga Creek, where they remained during the night.
