On Nov. 24th, 1863, Whitaker's Brigade of Cruft's Division, Granger's Corps, under Brig. Gen. Walter C. Whitaker, included the 96th Illinois under Col. Thomas E. Champion and Maj. George Hicks, the 35th Indiana under Col. Bernard F. Mullen, the 8th Kentucky under Col. Sidney M. Barnes, the 40th Ohio under Col. Jacob E. Taylor, the 51st Ohio under Lieut. Col. Charles H. Wood, and the 99th Ohio under Lieut. Col. John E. Cummings. The brigade crossed Lookout Creek with Geary's Division about 9 o'clock and formed the second line. Its right reached the foot of the palisades, and during the advance it maintained its position next to the palisades. After reaching the north point of the mountain, it moved down upon the Cravens House position, attacked the flank of the Confederate line opposing Geary's advance, and pressed about 200 yards beyond Cravens, helping hold the line until the Confederates withdrew from the mountain. On the morning of the 25th, five volunteers from the 8th Kentucky, under Capt. Wilson of Company C, climbed the palisades to the top of the mountain and, finding it evacuated, unfurled the regiment's flag on the point.
