This view in Peninsula State Park, preserved after the 1909 Wisconsin Legislature identified this land as worthy of preservation, opens northwest across Green Bay to the chain of Strawberry Islands, including Adventure, Little Strawberry, Jack, and Pirate, with Chambers Island on the horizon and the sister cities of Marinette, Wisconsin, and Menominee, Michigan, fourteen miles away. It evokes earlier travel by dug-out canoes, later steamships, and the passing of French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1634, a year that marked the beginning of cultural upheaval for Wisconsin Native Nations. Around 1930, Charles A. Kinney of Winnetka, Illinois, directed a boys camp on Adventure Island, the largest of the Strawberry Island chain. From 1915 to 1947, a fire watchtower stood on this bluff and was called Sven's Tower after retired sailor Sven Anondsen, who once lived nearby. Since the late 1990s, ravens have nested in rocky crevices along Sven's Bluff, an historic return to Peninsula's Niagara Escarpment; ravens are the world's largest songbird and hold meanings in First Nations traditions of Western Canada and in Celtic tradition.
