Lajos (Louis) Kossuth, the namesake of Kossuth County, was a Hungarian freedom fighter and leader of the 1848-1849 revolution for Hungarian independence. He was known as one of the greatest statesmen and orators of the mid-19th century. He was a prominent figure, well known in the United States at the time Kossuth County was established on January 15, 1851.
