The Union soldier and fountain in Winnebago County were purchased by the Woman's Relief Corps in 1899, unveiled on June 29, 1900, and dedicated on July 5, 1900. The local chapter, founded in 1891, cared for Union soldiers of the Civil War, extended aid to their widows and orphans, and honored the heroic dead. One hundred fifty-one Civil War veterans are buried in Winnebago County. The statue and fountain were separate pieces made by J. L. Mott Iron Works of Trenton, MN, and a 1900 J.L. Mott catalog listed the soldier at $155 painted and the fountain at $700. Only one other identical combination exists in the US. The Smithsonian Institute states that 124 Union and Confederate soldier statues exist today, and few stand in courthouse squares. The soldier is zinc, made of several pieces brazed together, and zinc was commonly used because of its cost, low melting point, strength, and availability. The fountain is French Victorian in design, with goats' heads as its most unique pieces. During the 1700's, the goat was a symbol of strength of victory, and its horns form a V, like the two-finger V for victory. Restoration occurred in 2005.
