Portions of the home now called Mac-A-Cheek Castle have been open to tours for over 100 years. Benjamin Piatt moved his family from Cincinnati to this farm near West Liberty in 1828, and his son Abram Piatt built the home between 1864 and 1871. Abram's son William McCoy Piatt helped build the home with his father and opened it to the public by 1912; a photograph first published in a souvenir booklet in 1916 shows him welcoming tourists there. In 1919, William and his brother Rivenoak were described as hospitable men who extended a hearty welcome to visitors entering through the office door. Unlike most historic house museums, the home is a privately owned residence and business managed by descendants of Abram and Hannah Piatt, and in 2019 William's granddaughter and interpretive staff welcomed visitors through the same office door.
