John Murphy, born in 1785 in Robeson County, North Carolina, came to Monroe County, Alabama, in 1818. He represented Monroe County in the Alabama Constitutional Convention in 1819 and in the state legislature from 1819 to 1822. He served as Governor of Alabama from 1825 to 1829, was elected to Congress in 1833 for one term, and died in 1841. He is buried in Gosport, 2 miles from here, on his Clarke County plantation.
