Westpoint Slough, the largest of several channels feeding Redwood Creek in San Mateo County, is a tidal waterway bordered by extensive undisturbed marshlands, with Greco Island marking its northern edge. Its broad mudflats, marshes, and open water form part of a larger estuarine landscape that provides important habitat for local and migratory wildlife, especially birds. At the same time, the slough lies beside modern Bay Area development, including Pacific Shores Center and the public Westpoint Harbor. Proposed housing on nearby salt ponds and plans for a commuter ferry terminal have made this wildlife-rich channel a focal point of continuing conflict over development, access, and conservation.
