Albert Terry Wright (1871–1944), born in Hanover County, Virginia, taught in Richmond’s black schools and by 1908 was teaching at White Stone in Lancaster County. By 1921 he was principal of Lancaster County’s first high school for blacks, built largely with funds raised by black residents and named in his honor. A.T. Wright High School served black students until 1959, when the county opened Brookvale High School. Wright and his school exemplified the struggle for education among Virginia’s rural blacks.
