Douglas argued that if each state minded its own business and left its neighbors alone, there would be no trouble over slavery, and that by standing by that principle the Republic could exist forever divided into free and slave states, as the fathers made it. Lincoln insisted that the fathers did not make the nation half slave and half free, but found slavery already existing and left it as it was because they did not know how to change it at the time.
