Spread of Slavery Into The Territories
Quincy, Illinois · Lincoln-Douglas Debate
History
Abraham Lincoln opposed slavery as an evil insofar as it sought to spread and insisted on a policy that would restrict it to its existing limits without infringing on the Constitution. Stephen Douglas said he would not support a congressional code of laws either for or against slavery in any territory and would leave the people of each territory to decide the question for themselves.
