Mossbrae Falls, in Dunsmuir in California’s Shasta Cascade region, sends spring-fed streams down a canyon wall into the Sacramento River. About 50 feet high and roughly 175 feet wide, it is known for many ribbon-like cascades, including two especially large streams, spreading over a moss-covered hillside rather than falling in a single chute. Its name reflects the lush, steep setting. The falls are among the area’s best-known natural sights, but reaching them safely has been difficult because the commonly used route follows an illegal railroad right of way where train accidents have injured hikers. Efforts toward a safer public access route have depended on Union Pacific approval.
