Hedge Creek Falls, in Dunsmuir in California’s Shasta Cascade region, is a small but popular waterfall reached by a short trail near Interstate 5. Its main distinction is a shallow natural cave behind the curtain of water, allowing visitors to walk behind the cascade, with a nearby overlook toward the Sacramento River and Mount Shasta. The falls were formed at the southern tip of an ancient lava flow from Mount Shasta, and erosion in basalt created the sheared rock face while the cave reflects the structure of thick lava flows. Local lore links the cave to Black Bart in 1879, and community opposition later saved the falls from being buried during Interstate 5 construction.
