Sherman County was formed from Young and Bexar Territories, created on August 21, 1876, and organized on June 13, 1889. It was named in honor of General Sidney Sherman, 1805-1873, commander of the left wing of the army at the Battle of San Jacinto and a member of the Texas Congress in 1842-1843. The county seat was Coldwater in 1889 and has been Stratford since 1901.
