The Hargrove House was the ante-bellum residence of Asbury Hargrove, 1809 ~ 1879. It served as the headquarters of Brig. Gen. Edward M. McCook from July 6 ~ 15, 1864. McCook’s 1st division, including Dorr’s and Lamson’s brigades, of Elliott’s Cavalry Corps, Army of the Cumberland, [US], was posted here to patrol the Chattahoochee between Rottenwood Creek to the south and Roswell to the north. McCook’s horsemen served as a screen behind which the 23d and 4th Corps moved to crossings at the mouth of Soap Creek and at Power’s Ferry on July 15. On that day McCook’s cavalry left Hargrove’s to patrol the river on the Cobb County side, above and below the State Railroad at Bolton until the 22d.
