Near this site, the Bell Solar Battery, invented at Bell Telephone Laboratories to convert the sun's light into electrical energy and later used to power communications from earth vehicles voyaging in outer space, received its first practical test. Placed in service October 4, 1955, the installation here provided power for the operation of rural telephone lines.
