In August 1864, A.J. Riddle took a photograph from a sentry box just downslope from this spot while preparing a report for the Confederate government. His seven glass-plate negatives were apparently the only photographs taken of Andersonville prison during the war. The surviving photos show the same ground seen here, including the deadline, a camp road called North or Market Street, the crowded shebangs, and more scattered shelters in the swampy area near the creek.
