On August 23, 1862, 650 cavalry of Gen. E. Kirby Smith's invading CSA army routed a small Federal force under Col. Leonidas Metcalfe here while moving to seize Kentucky in cooperation with the CSA army under Gen. Braxton Bragg. Central Kentucky was captured, but plans to take Cincinnati and Louisville failed. The CSA retired from Kentucky after the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862.
