On land granted Stephen F. Austin by Mexico, E. B. and Mollie Thomas, devout Methodists, gave the site where, since the first grave in 1853, many early Texans have been buried. The church was built by Wm. Hoskins, and the community was named for Rev. George Phair, pastor here in 1875-1876 and 1882-1885.
